Here’s one more foreign policy position opposed by the United States that Russia supports: Their deputy foreign minister announced they back the Palestinian plan to seek a United Nations-imposed timeframe on the creation of a Palestinian state out of Israeli territory. Russia previously has also backed Iran in their nuclear dispute with the West and vetoed two UN resolutions against the Syrian regime for their brutal actions in the civil war there.
RIA Novosti reported that Russian official Mikhail Bogdanov said they don’t even see any need to object to any proposal presented by the Palestinians to the powerful UN Security Council. Various reports have said the Palestinians plan to eventually propose the UN put some type of deadline on an Israeli withdrawal from lands claimed by the Palestinians, including roughly half of Jerusalem, Israel’s capital city.
In the past, the US has opposed Palestinian efforts to circumvent negotiations with Israel by turning to the UN to impose a solution on the situation. The Americans previously wielded their influence to bog down a Palestinian effort to get the Security Council involved in their territorial aims.
The US also is one of five nations, including Russia, that hold veto power in the Security Council.
