Al-Qaeda in Syria Spreads Influence, Targeting Israel?

Remember all those fears that Syria could turn into a new Afghanistan-like base for terrorists? Looks like those fears are becoming reality. The Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front in Syria is already expanding and is looking to target other countries.

The US just designated as a terrorist the new head of the Syria-based Al-Nusra Front’s Palestinian branch in Lebanon. The really scary thing is that not only does this show that Al-Nusra is reaching abroad of Syria, but their man in Lebanon has previously been affiliated with a Lebanese terror group that wants to destroy Israel. Could Al-Nusra be planning terror outside of Syria?

The US State Department said in a statement that Usamah Amin al-Shihabi is now a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist.” Understandable, since he not only is an Al-Nusra leader but also has at times “played a key leadership role” in Fatah al-Islam (FAI) according to the State Department.

The statement said that FAI’s “ultimate goal” is to establish Islamic Sharia law among the Palestinian refugees and the destruction of Israel.

It certainly looks like Al-Qaeda in Syria is preparing for future terror attacks in other countries. Lebanon is clearly a target, and Israel could be next. Makes you wonder how long it will take before the US is on that list.
